Head Rules Out Bangladesh Tour; Marsh Missing for ODI Series

Australia has suffered a major double blow ahead of their upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh.

The reigning world champions will be without star batters Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, while leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has also been ruled out due to injury.

In their places, Matt Short, Oliver Peake, and off-spinner Todd Murphy have been drafted into the squad.

Marsh will miss the ODI series as he continues his recovery from a lingering ankle injury. However, he is scheduled to join the squad in Dhaka to begin preparations for the subsequent T20I series.

Meanwhile, Travis Head has pulled out of the entire Bangladesh tour due to personal reasons, making him unavailable for both the ODI and T20I legs.

In Head’s absence, much of the spotlight will fall on 19-year-old Oliver Peake.

The former Australia Under-19 captain, who made his international debut during the recent tour of Pakistan, earned widespread praise for his composed batting under pressure.

The young batter now faces a fresh opportunity to prove his mettle in subcontinental conditions.

Australia captain Josh Inglis noted that the conditions in Bangladesh would pose a stern test for overseas batters, emphasizing that tackling spin and reverse swing will require specialized skills.

On the bowling front, a hamstring injury has sidelined Tanveer Sangha. He has been replaced by off-spinner Todd Murphy, who now stands on the verge of making his limited-overs international debut.

The three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Australia is scheduled to commence on June 9 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

The remaining two matches will be played at the same venue on June 11 and 14.

Bangladesh take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series following a nine-wicket victory in the first Test in Darwin today. They are now on the brink of a historic chance to sweep the series. However, the outcome of the first Test helped Bangladesh climb to fourth place in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 66.67. The win was Bangladesh's first Test victory on Australian soil and came after a 23-year wait for another Test in the country. Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198 in the first innings before posting 426, with Tanzid Hasan Tamim scoring a century and Hasan Mahmud taking six wickets. Australia were dismissed for 284 in their second innings, leaving Bangladesh a target of 57, which they chased for the loss of one wicket. The victory lifted Bangladesh's points percentage from 58.33 to 66.67 and moved them into the top four of the WTC table. Shanto, however, said the team would not get carried away by the possibility of qualifying for the final. "If you look at the points table, there is definitely a chance. However, as a captain, I always say one thing in the dressing room: don't think too far ahead," Shanto said at the post-match press conference. "How can we play this series or this Test well, that is important. It was a very big win, the best win in the country's history. However, we are still not an average world team.
