In a predictable mismatch, third-ranked Argentina played what amounted to a glorified practice session against 155th-ranked Puerto Rico at Chase Stadium in Miami, winning their international friendly 6-0. The score line was anything but friendly as Argentina completely dominated their opponents.
Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in the victory, contributing to two goals and breaking an international football record. Lautaro Martínez and Alexis Mac Allister each scored two goals, while Gonzalo Montiel added one. The sixth goal was an own goal by Puerto Rico's Steven Echevarria in the 64th minute.
Fans who missed the match missed seeing a new international football record being set. In the 22nd minute, Messi delivered a perfect lobbed pass for Gonzalo Montiel's goal, drawing him level with Neymar for the most assists in international football (59).
The Argentine legend then surpassed the Brazilian six minutes before the final whistle, setting up Lautaro Martínez with a back-pass. Messi now holds the sole record for the most assists (60) in international football, achieving the feat upon his return from a rest during the last friendly against Venezuela.
In the one-sided affair, Argentina's goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was rarely tested but managed three saves, including an excellent stop on a long-range shot from Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Rivera in the first half. For the majority of the game, Argentina controlled the ball almost exclusively in the opposition's half. The scoring began in the 13th minute when Messi’s shot struck the crossbar, and the rebound from Nico González’s shot deflected off Mac Allister and into the net.
The final score could have been wider if not for six saves by Puerto Rico's goalkeeper, Sebastian Catlle. Argentina fired off 25 shots, with 11 on target. Lionel Scaloni's team maintained 68.6% of the possession, underscoring the "playtime" nature of the match against a Puerto Rico squad that the Associated Press reported included several college-level players.
For Argentina, however, the match served as crucial preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The players showed no complacency, seizing every opportunity to score. Mac Allister netted his second goal in the 36th minute from an assist by the debutant Flaco López.
Argentina added two goals in the second half, in addition to the own goal. Lautaro Martínez scored in the 79th and 84th minutes, with the final goal being a result of great synergy, where Messi played a back-pass to Martínez running into the box.
The match also saw four players make their debut for Argentina: Flaco López, Aníbal Moreno, Lautaro Rivero, and goalkeeper Facundo Cambeses, who was substituted on for Martínez in the 76th minute. Moreno and Rivero were brought on as half-time substitutes.
