Thousands of Bangladeshi freelancers are playing a silent but pivotal role in the rapid global expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by training various AI models. However, experts warn that relying solely on training roles could leave Bangladesh’s position in the sector vulnerable if the country fails to develop its own AI-based products and services.

Vital Contributions to AI Accuracy
According to industry experts, Bangladeshi professionals are deeply involved in critical tasks that make AI more precise and effective. These include: Organizing and cleaning data, Correcting errors and evaluating AI responses, Image and audio recognition, Verifying the quality of AI conversations and conducting safety testing.

Market Growth and Economic Impact
Market analysts indicate that the global market for data preparation and curation was worth approximately $2.37 billion USD in 2025 and is projected to reach nearly $30 billion USD by 2034.

Data from the World Bank suggests that globally, between 154 million and 435 million people are currently engaged in online work related to AI training.

In Bangladesh, this sector is expanding rapidly. Government statistics show there are approximately 650,000 freelancers in the country, who earned roughly $725 million USD from international markets in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The Need for Strategic Evolution
Experts caution that while Bangladesh has successfully established itself in the global market by offering skilled labor at competitive costs, the landscape is shifting. Many routine and repetitive tasks are increasingly being automated, which threatens the future demand for such entry-level services.

Nabil Mohammad, an Associate Professor of Computer Science at North South University, noted that while data preparation is a good start for the country, it must serve as a foundation for developing higher-value technologies.

"Otherwise," he warned, "this will simply become another sector where we provide low-cost labor for foreign firms." He emphasized that the value of basic AI training tasks is likely to diminish quickly, posing risks of both wage stagnation and job losses for those who do not upgrade their skills.

Opportunities and Challenges
Workers in the field express mixed experiences regarding career progression. While some, like Tausif Niloy, see opportunities to move from basic training into project coordination or policy-making, others like Fardin Zarif point out that many firms fail to provide the promised career growth, leading to layoffs instead.

Experts conclude that for Bangladesh to remain competitive in the future, it must move beyond being a data-processing hub. They urge a greater focus on policy support, research, and public-private partnerships to foster the development of local AI technologies, products, and services.
