European aviation giant Airbus' proposal to sell two A350-900 passenger planes is not financially viable for Biman Bangladesh Airlines as its net cash flow is negative over the next 25 years compared to capital investment.

According to a report, the total investment for the two aircraft will exceed 1 billion dollars, equivalent to 12,000 crore at current exchange rates.

A report prepared by the national flag carrier's Techno-Financial Evaluation Committee that a total of 900 million dollars will be paid for the two aircraft by June 2027, which is 18.6% higher than Airbus' 763.75 million dollars as of January 1, 2023. Buying two Airbus A350 planes will result in huge losses.

In addition, Biman Bangladesh will have to pay a 10 million dollars non-refundable commitment fee at the time of signing the MoU. In addition, an initial investment of 126 million dollars is expected to be required for various equipment such as spare engines, parts, tools, equipment supplies and crew training.

Thus, the total investment for the two aircraft will exceed 1 billion dollars, which equates to 12,000 crore at current exchange rates.

According to the Appraisal Committee, this huge capital investment will generate negative cash flow over the next 25 years based on Biman's operating plan, due to lower revenue generation, lower yield.

As the project is not financially viable, the airline may not consider purchasing two new A350-900 passenger aircraft, according to the Airbus reporting committe.

However, the report noted, alternative financing at an interest rate of less than 1% and changes in route, frequency and fleet size could make the project feasible.

The evaluation report said that while the A350 is popular among the world's leading airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines will face challenges in crew management, engineering training, logistics, pre-flight inspections and supply of spare parts and equipment while introducing the aircraft to its fleet.

The report also says that the Management must consider very carefully before taking the final decision.
