Flood situation worsens in Sylhet, 7 lakh people stuck in water

In 2022, there was a terrible flood in Sylhet. This years flood reminding that flood to the people of Sylhet. In last 24 hours the rain in Sylhet has reduced a little. However, the hill slope continues. This has further worsened the flood situation. New areas are being flooded.

As of Wednesday (June 19) morning, nearly seven lakh people are stuck in water. Along with the five upazilas bordering Sylhet, Gowainghat, Kanaighat, Jaintapur, Companiganj and Zakiganj, floods also spread in Sadar, Dokkhin Surma, Bishwanath, Fenchuganj, Golapganj and Balaganj upazilas. New areas of these upazilas are getting flooded.

According to Sylhet district administration, 21 wards of the city and 1 thousand 323 villages of the district have been flooded till Tuesday morning. 6 lakh 75 thousand 937 people have been affected by flood. Half a million people in the city are waterlogged.

627 shelters have been opened in district and city. Of these, 80 are in the city. The district administration said that 17 thousand 285 people have taken shelter in these shelters.

According to the Water Development Board, Sylhet, the water of Surma river is flowing 91 cm above the water level at Kanaighat point of Surma river on Wednesday. At the Sylhet point of the same river, the water is flowing 37 cm above the flood limit. Kushiara River is flowing 46 cm above the equator at Amalshid Point. Fenchuganj point of the same river is 92 cm and Sherpur point is 12 cm above the flood limit. Apart from this, water is flowing 0.9 cm above the danger line at Saraighat point of Sari-Goain river.

Meanwhile, water has risen up in the houses of many people in Low-lying areas of the city are particularly with Shahjalal suburb completely submerged and water reaching neck level in many homes. Other severely affected areas include Jatrapur, Mendibagh, Shibganj, Raingar, Sobhanighat, Kalighat, Kamalgarh, Machimpur, Taltala, Jamtola, Kajirbazar, Madina Market, Akhaliya, and Mezortil. Several important roads within the city are also flooded. Colonies or houses in low-lying areas are almost completely submerged in flood water. The people of these areas are in extreme trouble.

Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Sheikh Russel Hasan told the media that due to the deterioration of the flood situation in Sylhet, necessary activities are being carried out by the upazila administration to rescue the people who trapped in water. Control rooms have been set up in the office of the District Commissioner and the offices of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer to monitor the overall flood situation. In addition to the appointment of dedicated officers in each upazila, tag officers have been appointed in each union. Union-based medical teams are being formed to provide health care to the flood victims.

Sylhet Meteorological Office Assistant Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib told the media that Sylhet received 100 mm of rain from 6 am to 6 am on Wednesday and 55 mm of rain from 6 am to 9 am on Wednesday. Sylhet may receive continuous rain for the next few days.

It should be noted that 7.5 lakh people of all upazilas of the district were affected.
