Protest deaths: Bangladesh to observe National Mourning today

National mourning has been declared today (July 30) in memory of victims of quota movement.

This decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister's office on Monday (July 29). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.

Mahbub Hossain, Secretary of the Cabinet confirmed this information to reporters while briefing at the secretariat.

He said, 'Situation that arose with the anti-quota movement, a report was presented by the Home Minister in the cabinet meeting. Other ministers also presented detailed information on their behalf. After reviewing the information there, the Cabinet took two decisions. One is to accept a condolence proposal for those who were killed in this movement. That proposal has been formally taken up. And the second one, will be mourned across the country tomorrow.

He further said, 'Black batch will be weared as part of mourning. Prayers will be offered in mosques, temples, churches and pagodas.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed that 147 people were killed in the conflict and violence surrounding the quota movement. He expressed such information during a press briefing at his office at the Secretariat.

The quota reform movement started on July 1. On July 15, after the clashes surrounding the students' movement in Dhaka University, protests spread almost all over the country. From July 16, attacks, clashes, violence, vandalism, arson and casualties occurred in different parts of the country including Dhaka.

Since then, the number of casualties has been published in the media, but this is the first time the death toll has been announced by the government. However, according to various media reports, more than two hundred people died so far in the movement.
