Bangladesh is Facing Losses Due to the Rohingya Crisis: Dr. Yunus
Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has stated that Bangladesh is facing social, economic, and environmental losses due to the Rohingya crisis.
He made this statement during his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, September 27.
Dr. Yunus said, "For the past seven years, Bangladesh has provided shelter to over 1.2 million Rohingyas who fled from Myanmar on humanitarian grounds. As a result, we are facing significant social, economic, and environmental challenges."
He added, "This crisis, stemming from Myanmar's internal problems, has posed both conventional and unconventional security threats to Bangladesh and our region."
The Chief Adviser emphasized, "We are committed to assisting the forcibly displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar. We seek continued and sufficient international support to maintain humanitarian aid programs for the Rohingyas and to ensure their sustainable repatriation."
He further noted, "Ensuring justice for the Rohingyas through ongoing proceedings at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court is equally important. It is necessary to create a pathway for the Rohingyas to return to their homeland in Rakhine with guaranteed security and rights."
Dr. Yunus concluded, "Considering Myanmar's ever-changing situation, Bangladesh is ready to work with the international community to create an environment conducive to the dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas to their own country."
