Interim Government Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has stated that the current primary objective is to build a competitive and robust economy, along with a just social system, by correcting the mistakes of the past.

He made these remarks during his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, September 27.

Dr. Yunus said, "The youth and the general public of the country have entrusted me and my advisory council with the great responsibility of restructuring a state system that has become unbearable. They have placed their faith in us to lead the government."

He added, "Since taking office, we have been deeply shocked and dismayed to witness how pervasive corruption has reduced an effective democratic system to ruins, how the core institutions of the state were trapped in ruthless partisanship, how public wealth was pillaged, and how a specific self-serving group monopolized business and trade while freely smuggling the nation’s assets abroad. In short, justice, principles, and ethics disappeared at every level."

"In such a situation, we have been entrusted with the task of rebuilding the nation and restoring the state system that the people desire. Our main goal at this moment is to correct the errors of the past and build a competitive and strong economy, along with a just society," he said.

The Chief Adviser emphasized that, under the current changed circumstances, all political parties are now free to express their opinions. Ensuring the accountability of every individual or institution involved in state functions and decision-making is a top priority.

He further stated, "We are firmly committed to upholding and protecting the fundamental rights of the people. It is our goal that the people of our country will speak freely, assemble without fear, and elect their preferred candidates through voting. We are also committed to preserving judicial independence and strengthening the freedom of the media, including the cyber domain."

Dr. Yunus said, "We are focusing on increasing allocations to the health and education sectors, rather than on building massive infrastructure, to ensure that even the child of a farmer or laborer can reach the highest levels of society. Our goal is to restore good governance at all levels of the state system."

He concluded, "Our government is committed to upholding the international, regional, and bilateral agreements to which Bangladesh is a party. Bangladesh is eager to maintain friendly relations with all nations of the world, based on mutual respect, dignity, and safeguarding interests."
