Everything Won't Change Just Because of a New U.S. President: Dr. Yunus
Interim government’s Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, stated, “I don’t believe that everything will change just because there is a new president in the United States. Foreign policy and relations between countries usually don’t change solely because of a shift in the presidency.”
On Monday (November 18), Indian news outlet The Hindu published an interview with the Chief Adviser, during which Dr. Muhammad Yunus shared these views.
In the interview, The Hindu journalist referred to a statement by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump about minority persecution in Bangladesh and asked the Chief Adviser how confident he was about the continuation of international aid under the new U.S. administration.
In response, Dr. Yunus clarified that he believed President Trump had not issued any statement about Bangladesh. At this point, the journalist of The Hindu mentioned that Trump had indeed made remarks regarding the situation of minorities.
In reply, the Chief Adviser commented, “Good. Now, let me address the matter of Bangladesh and minorities. Perhaps he isn’t properly informed. This is part of the misinformation being spread globally. However, when he works with Bangladesh and learns the reality, Mr. Trump will be surprised at how differently Bangladesh was portrayed to him. I don’t think everything will change just because there is a new president in the United States. Foreign policy and relations between countries typically don’t change simply because of a presidential transition.”
He added, “Even if there are changes during Trump’s second term, we must remember this is also a new Bangladesh—what we call ‘Bangladesh 2.’ So, we will wait. If U.S. representatives visit and witness our progress, and if our economy continues to improve, they will take a great interest in us. They are Bangladesh’s largest buyer, and we, in turn, rely on them. This is a very strong relationship that has been built over years. We hope it will continue to grow stronger.”
