We Witnessed a Repetition of '71 in July: Shafiqul Alam
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, remarked, "Just as the Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators ruthlessly abducted intellectuals in 1971, we witnessed a similar recurrence in July. You saw how six of our top student leaders were taken away similarly."
He made these comments while speaking to journalists after paying homage at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial on Saturday morning (December 14).
Shafiqul Alam stated, "Just as intellectuals left their writings for their successors, students like Ahnaf are now writing letters to their mothers, saying they are going to fight."
He added, "The dream of a new Bangladesh, the vision we are striving to build under the leadership of Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is a continuation of the aspirations of the martyred intellectuals. We are advancing in the light of their dreams."
Earlier at 7:05 am, the President of Bangladesh Md. Sahabuddin and later the Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, paid floral tributes to the nation's greatest sons. Both observed a moment of silence during their homage.
On December 14, 1971, just two days before Bangladesh achieved its ultimate victory in the nine-month-long Liberation War, the occupying Pakistani forces and their local collaborators brutally killed the country's finest intellectuals to deprive the nation.
In memory of this horrific massacre, Bangladesh observes Martyred Intellectuals Day every year on December 14.
