The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) is prepared to organize the national election either in late 2025 or the first half of 2026, as announced by the Chief Advisor of the interim government.

Election Commissioner Tahmida Ahmed shared this information on Monday (December 16) afternoon.

Earlier that morning, in a speech to the nation on the occasion of Victory Day, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, stated that the national election could be held in late 2025 or early 2026, subject to necessary reforms and the accurate preparation of the voter list.

The Chief Advisor said, "I have repeatedly appealed to you to hold the election after completing all major reforms. However, due to political consensus, if we are required—again, I emphasize 'if'—to conduct the election based on only a few key reforms and the accurate preparation of the voter list, then it might be possible to hold the election by late 2025."

He further explained, "The first and foremost task is updating the voter list, which is a highly challenging process. Given that voter participation was absent in the last three elections, this task has become even more complicated. There has been no opportunity to verify the voter list. We must ensure that all those eligible to vote in the last 15 years are included in the voter list. This is a significant undertaking."

Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized, "After the student-led uprising, there is no room for error in this process. After a long time, many young individuals will be voting for the first time in their lives. In the past, they were deprived of this right and the joy of participating in elections. Therefore, their participation in this election will be a memorable event."
