Elections May Be Held in Late 2025: Chief Advisor
The Chief Advisor of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, stated that if the voter list is accurately prepared with minor reforms, it might be possible to hold elections by late 2025.
However, if further reforms are implemented based on the Election Commission's recommendations and national consensus, along with improvements to the electoral process, an additional six months may be required. Broadly speaking, the timeframe for elections could be set between late 2025 and the first half of 2026.
He made these remarks on Monday (December 16) during his address to the nation on the occasion of Victory Day.
Dr. Yunus emphasized that the most important task is to update the voter list, describing it as inherently challenging. The difficulty has increased because, in the last three elections, many voters were denied the opportunity to participate, and the voter list was not verified. He stressed the importance of ensuring that everyone eligible to vote over the past 15 years is included in the updated list, calling it a monumental task.
"There is no room for errors after the student and public uprisings," he said. "For many young men and women, this will be their first chance to vote in their lives. In the past, they were deprived of this right and the joy that comes with it."
