Babul Kazi (59), the grandson of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, has passed away. He breathed his last on Sunday (January 19) at 5:30 pm while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, the resident surgeon of the Burn Institute, confirmed the news.
Earlier, as his condition deteriorated, he was placed on life support on Saturday (January 18) night. Additionally, a 19-member medical board was formed to oversee his treatment.
On Saturday at 5:30 am, Babul Kazi sustained burns in an explosion while smoking in the bathroom of his residence in Banani, Dhaka. He was rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery by his family members in critical condition.
Following the incident, Babul Kazi's elder sister Khilkhil Kazi stated that Babul had a habit of smoking. Early in the morning, while lighting a cigarette with a gas lighter in the bathroom, an explosion occurred, leaving him severely burned.
It is suspected that methane gas in the bathroom caused the explosion. His family members immediately took him to the Burn Institute for treatment.
Khilkhil Kazi also mentioned that Babul Kazi lived on Road No. 23 in Banani with his wife, Kazi Nadeera Farzana, two sons, and a daughter. Additionally, Babul Kazi was involved in the garment business.
