Lutfozzaman Babar, the former State Minister for Home Affairs, has been admitted to a hospital in Dubai after falling ill while travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.

Babar, who was released from prison on January 16 after nearly 17 years behind bars, was on an Emirates Airlines flight from Dhaka with his wife, two daughters, and son when he began experiencing chest pain mid-flight. Upon landing in Dubai at approximately 10:30 PM local time on Thursday (January 30), he received initial medical attention at the airport before being transferred to a hospital for further treatment.

Zakir Hossain, the convener of BNP in the UAE, confirmed the news on Friday (January 31). He stated that while Babar's wife and daughters have continued their journey to Saudi Arabia, his son, Labib, has stayed behind to be with him. Once his health improves, Babar is expected to resume his journey to perform Umrah before heading to Singapore for further medical treatment with his family.

This is not the first time Babar has faced health issues since his release. On January 19, just three days after regaining his freedom, he suffered from chest pain and shortness of breath, leading to his hospitalization in Dhaka.

Babar was recently acquitted in the high-profile 10-truck arms case in Chattogram. On January 14, the High Court bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akhter overturned his life sentence, clearing him of all charges. Previously arrested on May 28, 2007, he had been convicted in multiple cases. However, following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year due to a student-led uprising, his legal appeals were heard, resulting in successive acquittals.
