Govt Bars Officials Who Served 'Fascist Regime' Elections from Next Poll Duties

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that they have decided to refrain from assigning election duties to officials who were assigned in the previous three national elections -- 2014, 2018 and 2024 -- held under the fascist regime as a part of their efforts to ensure a free, fair and neutral election.

"During the upcoming elections, refrain as much as possible from giving election duties to people who performed them in the previous 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections, for holding it in a free, fair, neutral and peaceful manner," he said while briefing the media about the outcome of today's core committee meeting on the law and order at the Home Ministry in Bangladesh Secretariat here.

Replying to a question, the Home Adviser said they are taking every possible measures as none can disrupt peaceful holding of the next general elections."There will be no problem, the election will be held in a better way," he said, adding that they have decided to take strict legal actions against the persons or groups involved in creating disorder ahead of the elections.

The Home Adviser also said they have given instructions to the Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, Upazila Nirbahi Officers and OCs at the field level to work impartially to ensure that the upcoming national elections are conducted in a free, fair and impartial manner and have also decided to warn members of law enforcement agencies and officials on election duties about their involvement in any illegal acts.

Jahangir said CCTV cameras will be installed in all risky polling stations and take effective monitoring measures will be taken to ensure security in the upcoming national elections. He also stressed the need to arrange an adequate number of body-worn cameras for the law enforcement agencies and officials on election duties.

The meeting also suggested strengthen patrolling and intelligence surveillance of the law enforcement agencies so that the law and order situation does not deteriorate in the upcoming elections, he added.

The Home Adviser also informed that as many as 1.5 lakh police personnel, 5.85 lakh Ansar personnel, 33,000 BGB personnel will be given electoral training for the peaceful holding of the upcoming election, he said.

He added that 80,000 members of the armed forces will be deployed during the next election.

Jahangir also said that the fascist Awami League's sudden processions have decreased significantly compared to the previous ones.

The fascists and their cohorts tried to hatch various conspiracies to disrupt the peaceful celebrations of the Durga Puja festival. The situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts is now good and the law and order situation there is under control, he said.

Moreover, a zero-tolerance policy has been adopted to stamp out the drug menace from society, he said.

Asked about whether he wants a safe exit, Jahangir said, "My children are residing in the country. What will I do if I go alone?"
