Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the number of mobile SIMs that can be registered under a single subscriber’s National Identity Card (NID) will be reduced before the upcoming national elections.

“The current limit of 15 SIMs per NID will be reduced to 10 after this month, with further reductions planned before the election,” he said while speaking to reporters after the 15th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on the Law and Order at the Home Ministry on Sunday.

Explaining the cause of limiting the SIM against an NID, the Home Adviser said that many crimes are committed using SIM cards registered under other people’s names, making it difficult to trace the real perpetrators.

“To prevent misuse and enhance security, we are reducing the number of SIM cards that can be registered under one person’s name,” he continued.

About complaints on level playing field before election, the Adviser stated that there had been no objections from political parties regarding a level playing field.

He assured that recruitment and postings in law enforcement agencies have been carried out with transparency, and the government is committed to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Nasimul Ghani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General (DG) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Bangladesh Ansar and VDP DG Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud were also present at the briefing.
