The mortal remains of six Bangladesh Army peacekeepers, who were martyred in a terrorist drone strike on a UN Mission Base in Sudan, were repatriated to Dhaka on Saturday.
Arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) via an Emirates Airlines flight, the fallen heroes were received with high military honors.
Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, Chief of General Staff of the Bangladesh Army, was present at the airport to officially receive the bodies, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release.
Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, the Acting Resident Representative of the United Nations in Bangladesh, a representative of the Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, military officers and members of the media were also present.
During the solemn reception at the airport, attendees observed a one-minute silence while military personnel rendered formal salutes to honor the fallen heroes. These peacekeepers lost their lives during a brutal terrorist drone strike on a United Nations peacekeeping base in the Abyei region of Sudan on December 13.
The final rites are scheduled for Sunday, beginning with funeral prayers (namaz-e-janaza) at the Dhaka Cantonment Central Mosque. Following the service, the remains will be transported via military helicopter to their respective hometowns, where they will be laid to rest with full military honors.
In addition to the fatalities, nine other Bangladeshi peacekeepers sustained injuries during the same attack. Eight of the wounded are currently receiving specialized care at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where medical officials confirm they are now out of danger.
