Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud clarified on Friday that there are no legal obstacles preventing Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from registering as a voter in Bangladesh.
The statement comes just a day after Tarique Rahman’s historic homecoming after 17 years in exile.
EC Masud also said that if the Election Commission wishes, it can register anyone as a voter at any time.
He told the local media that he could not confirm whether Tarique Rahman would come to the Election Commission building on Saturday (28 December) to complete the voter registration process.
Earlier this week, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed announced that Tarique Rahman is set to complete his voter registration and National Identity Card (NID) formalities on Saturday, December 27.
Earlier on 22 December, following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that Tarique Rahman would become a voter on Saturday (27 December) after returning to the country.
