Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman completed his voter registration process and National Identity Card (NID) formalities on Saturday.
To complete the process, Tarique Rahman arrived at the Election Training Institute (ETI) in the capital's Agargaon area around 1 pm.
Under heightened security, he registered his name on the voter list, providing all biometric information, including Iris scans and fingerprints at 1:18 pm.
Addressing the media regarding the registration, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud confirmed that there are no legal obstacles to the BNP leader becoming a voter.
Citing the law, the Commissioner explained that under Section 15 of the Voter List Act, the Election Commission holds the authority to register any eligible citizen at any time.
To participate in the elections, it is mandatory to be a registered voter in any constituency. Tarique Rahman applied online to become a voter of Ward 19 in Dhaka-17 constituency (Gulshan area).
This move is widely seen as a crucial milestone for the BNP leader following his return from 17 years in exile, as it formally restores his administrative standing and eligibility within the country's electoral system.
