The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday officially approved the inclusion of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in the country’s voter list.
The decision was confirmed by EC Director of Public Relations Ruhul Amin Mallik, following a commission meeting on Sunday afternoon. This approval paves the way for the BNP leader to contest the upcoming13th National Parliament Election 2026 and the Referendum, both scheduled for February 12.
The approval follows a visit by Tarique Rahman and his daughter, Zaima Rahman, to the EC’s National Identity (NID) Wing in Agargaon on Saturday. During their visit, both completed the mandatory registration process, including the submission of biometric data and photographs.
According to EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, the duo has been registered as voters in the Dhaka-17 constituency under DNCC Ward No. 19, using their Gulshan-2 residence as their permanent address. The Secretary noted that the registration was processed in strict accordance with the Electoral Rolls Act 2009.
This administrative milestone comes just days after Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter Zaima returned to Bangladesh on December 25, ending nearly 17 years of exile in the United Kingdom.
While Zubaida Rahman had visited the country twice earlier this year, this marks the first time Tarique and Zaima have been on Bangladeshi soil since their departure in September 2008.
With his voter status now active, the BNP Acting Chairman is legally eligible to lead his party’s campaign and stand as a candidate in the forthcoming general elections.
