Bangladesh formally established diplomatic relations with the Caribbean nation of Grenada, marking the beginning of a new era of bilateral cooperation.

The official ties were inaugurated through the signing of a joint declaration at the Bangladesh High Commission in London on Thursday afternoon.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Abida Islam and Grenada’s High Commissioner to the UK Rachér Croney signed the document on behalf of their respective governments.

While both nations have been members of the United Nations since September 17, 1974, they had operated without formal diplomatic channels until this historic step.

The initiative, approved by the Advisory Council under the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is seen as a strategic move to bolster South-South cooperation.

Describing the event as a significant milestone, High Commissioner Abida Islam said, “This is not merely a diplomatic formality; it is a bridge between South Asia and the Caribbean.”

She further emphasized that the relationship is built on a shared vision for a fair global order, stating, “The relationship is founded on mutual respect and a shared vision for a fair and just global order.”

As fellow members of the Commonwealth, both countries highlighted their common values regarding sovereignty and nation-building.

High Commissioner Islam noted the unique bond between the two nations, remarking, “We will strengthen our voices together on the international stage.”

The partnership is expected to focus on climate resilience and economic exchange.

The High Commissioner pointed to the potential for a strong alliance by combining Bangladesh’s leadership in disaster management with Grenada’s influential role among Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Additionally, the two countries aim to expand industrial cooperation, particularly in pharmaceuticals and textiles, leveraging Bangladesh's manufacturing capabilities and Grenada’s strategic Caribbean location.
