William Nana Akufo-Addo, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group and former President of Ghana, has lauded the commencement of Bangladesh’s the 13th National Parliament Election and the Referendum, describing the process as a "tremendous signal" to the world.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday after visiting the Viqarunnisa Noon School and College polling centre, Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the smooth start of the ballot, remarking, "So far, so good."

He emphasized that the successful conduct of these polls demonstrates Bangladesh’s firm determination to charter a democratic future, serving as a powerful example for South Asia and the wider global community.

Highlighting the role of the nation’s youth, the Chairperson noted that the engagement of citizens under 35—who make up a significant portion of the electorate—is vital for long-term stability and will inspire young people across the Commonwealth.

The 14-member Commonwealth mission, which arrived in Dhaka on February 4 and includes experts from diverse fields such as law, politics, and diplomacy, is tasked with assessing the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

Having met with media, civil society, and political leaders, the group will continue its observation through the post-election period, with an interim report on their findings scheduled for release on February 14.

Akufo-Addo underscored that the elections are taking place at a defining moment for the country, following intense public debate on institutional reform and the aspirations of citizens for a more inclusive system.

He reaffirmed the Commonwealth's solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, noting that the right to freely express one’s will remains a fundamental pillar of the Commonwealth Charter.
