The United Kingdom has assured Bangladesh of "due consideration" for its candidacy for the Presidency of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke provided this assurance during a courtesy call on newly appointed Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Minister Rahman officially sought London’s support for Bangladesh’s UNGA bid for the 2026–2027 term.

High Commissioner Cooke committed to relaying the credentials of the Bangladeshi candidate to her headquarters, noting the high level of competency involved.

The Foreign Minister also expressed his appreciation for the UK’s high-level representation at the new government’s recent oath-taking ceremony.

The discussions underscored the deep historical ties and the vital role of the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK as a bridge between the two nations.

Both sides explored expanding collaboration in key sectors, including education, migration, climate change, and security cooperation.

Minister Rahman specifically urged the UK to maintain its leadership role at the UN Security Council to expedite the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

Following the meeting, High Commissioner Cooke described the discussion as "very good," reaffirming the strength and depth of the UK-Bangladesh partnership.

"We discussed strengthening cooperation across a whole range of different areas in support of our shared priorities including economic growth, migration, security, climate change, and also the Rohingya," she told reporters.

Earlier in the day, the High Commissioner also met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam to discuss enhancing ties in healthcare, trade, and investment.
