President Mohammed Shahabuddin underscored the critical need for guaranteeing the safety of women both within and outside the home, asserting that such protection is vital to fully realizing the benefits of national development and prosperity.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration and the 'Best Indomitable Women Award' ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, the President called for a renewed societal commitment to gender equality.

“Let today’s pledge be that women and girls will no longer be victims of neglect, violence and discrimination, and that they will enjoy equal opportunities and dignity everywhere,” the President stated.

He outlined his vision for a liveable Bangladesh where every woman can grow up in a secure environment, achieve self-reliance, and assume leadership roles, while every girl is empowered to pursue her aspirations.

Highlighting the historic contributions of women, the President noted that the progress of women is inextricably linked to the progress of the nation, urging a shift in attitudes within patriarchal structures.

He paid tribute to the foundational efforts for women’s advancement laid by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and later strengthened by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who implemented compulsory primary education for girls and free education up to class XII.

The President noted that the current government plans to further this legacy by introducing free education for girls up to the postgraduate level.

A significant moment of the event was the posthumous honoring of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia with the “Best Indomitable Woman in Advancing Democracy” award.

Her granddaughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, accepted the honor on her behalf.

The President lauded the past administration’s commitment to strict legal measures against violence toward women and noted that special initiatives continue to be prioritized to combat modern challenges like online defamation and cyber-bullying.

The event, which featured the screening of a documentary titled “Today’s Steps, Tomorrow’s Justice: May the Rights of Women and Girls Be Protected,” also recognized five other women for their resilience and achievements across various categories.

Dr. Jobaida Rahman attended the ceremony as a special guest.

Addressing persistent issues such as wage inequality and social prejudice, the President called for collective action from families, educational institutions, religious leaders, and the media to foster a culture of respect.

He further highlighted the role of women in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, acknowledging them as a central driving force behind the country’s export earnings.
