Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today (on Monday) categorically said that there will be no 'mob culture’ in Bangladesh.

The minister also warned that programs like road blockades will not be allowed in the name of pressing for demands.

The Home Minister said this in response to a supplementary question raised by independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana (Brahmanbaria-2) during the question-answer session in the House.

Rumeen Farhana in her question said that there was a culture of disappearances, extra-judicial killings, and torture in custody for long 15 and half years during the fascist Awami League regime.

The home minister said, “Since, we took office, no mob incident was occurred. And it won’t be right to call everything a 'mob'; the definition should be different. Here, the definition needs to be different.”

Salahuddin said, “The attack on Palashbari police station in Gaibandha, the attack on a member of the Parliament on February 21, or the closure of shops in Uttara—do they constitute a mob? Not everything can be called the same.

There are some organized and planned crimes, against which cases are filed and investigated.”

He went on saying, “But, one thing is clear…there will be no mob culture in Bangladesh. We will never allow the trend of blocking highways on the roads to press home for demands, which was seen during the interim government,”

The minister said that there will be demands through the democratic process, demands can be made to the relevant authorities, seminars or public gatherings can be held. “But, we must get out of the trend of blocking roads to press home for demands.”
