Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed ordered law enforcement on Thursday to swiftly apprehend all perpetrators linked to the murder of Special Branch (SB) unarmed Sub-Inspector Md Altaf Hossain during a violent assault in Savar's Aminbazar.

The directive was issued during an afternoon meeting at the Secretariat with the slain officer's grieving family, where the minister pledged comprehensive measures to guarantee expedited legal retribution.

Highlighting ongoing relief measures, the minister noted that police headquarters disbursed BDT 600,000 from the welfare reserve to the family, alongside planned financial provisions—including Community Bank Bangladesh Limited credit facilities—to sustain family commercial operations.

Concurrently, authorities received instructions to confer a posthumous Police Medal (PPM) honoring Altaf's probity, valor, and committed tenure. Welfare relief was personally handed to the officer's widow, Mst Shyuli Parvin, during the session.

Reconstructing the sequence of events, SI Altaf intervened in an auto-rickshaw parking dispute around 7:30 pm on September 5 in Bordeshi Westpara, Aminbazar (Savar), before retreating into his elder son's commercial enterprise for safety.

At approximately 8:10 pm, assailants armed with local blades, iron rods, metal pipes, hammers, and wooden staves breached the premises. Younger son Md Ariful Islam sustained severe bladed injuries while attempting to shield his father.

Bystanders subsequently evacuated both victims to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where emergency physicians pronounced SI Altaf dead.

A murder complaint listing 15 suspects has since been filed by the victim's wife at Savar Model Police Station.

Enlisting originally as a constable from Sirajganj in 1986, Altaf completed a near-40-year career marked by integrity and operational dedication across the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Rangamati, RRF Rajshahi, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, and Barishal district force, culminating in a Special Branch assignment in Dhaka held continuously from 2011 onward.

He leaves behind his wife and two sons: Md Shariful Islam (30), a Manarat University BSc in Pharmacy graduate, and Md Ariful Islam (24), a mechanical engineering student at UCEP Polytechnic Institute.
