In a significant move to unify the nation ahead of the Bangla New Year 1433, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury has announced that the traditional Pahela Baishakh procession will now be officially titled "Baishakhi Shobhajatra."

The decision aims to replace former titles like "Mangal" or "Ananda" Shobhajatra to resolve ongoing public debates and foster a more inclusive atmosphere.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat following a high-level preparatory meeting, the Minister explained that the government chose the new name to end long-standing controversies that he described as "undesirable and potentially harmful to society."

"Pahela Baishakh is a universal festival deeply rooted in our agrarian traditions, seasonal cycles, and the heritage of all communities, including ethnic groups like the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and Garo," Minister Roy Chowdhury stated.

He emphasized that the rebranding is a step toward "unity in diversity," ensuring the festival remains a celebration of joy and prosperity for every citizen.

Preparations at Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts are already in full swing. According to a press release from the university, the Baishakhi Shobhajatra is scheduled to begin at 9 am on the morning of Pahela Baishakh.

The procession will follow its traditional route from the faculty premises, passing the Raju Sculpture, Doel Chattar, and Bangla Academy before returning to its starting point.
