Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday declared that restoring public confidence in the police and improving the national law and order situation remains the top priority of his administration.

The Prime Minister made these remarks in a message ahead of National Police Week 2026, which is set to begin on Sunday with a four-day program.

Highlighting the importance of institutional integrity, the Premier stated that a professional and responsible police force is vital to safeguarding the country’s stability and maintaining public trust.

He described the annual police week as a unique opportunity for the force to fulfill its commitment to becoming a truly reliable entity.

According to the Prime Minister, the government is currently implementing an elaborate roadmap to build a prosperous, self-reliant, and justice-based democratic nation.

However, he cautioned that these targets would be difficult to achieve without ensuring that public life is secure and relaxed.

"As a law enforcing agency, the role of police is very important," the Prime Minister noted. "In every national crisis, the force has played their role very professionally and sincerely."

He specifically pointed to the conduct of the police during the last general election as clear evidence that the force can operate with high efficiency when provided with a congenial and favorable atmosphere.

Beyond national borders, the Prime Minister praised the force's success in the international arena, adding that their contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions have significantly glorified the dignity of Bangladesh.

Reflecting on the political transition, the Premier observed that a democratic government has been established through free and fair elections after a gap of fifteen years, bringing a sense of relief to the citizenry.

He emphasized that the public now expects a country free from the "culture of disappearance, abduction, and fear," and urged the police to play a leading role in maintaining such a peaceful society.

Turning to contemporary challenges, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called on the force to be more effective in curbing mob violence, teenage gang activities, and the drug trade.

He concluded by stressing that state stability is indispensable for making the country's democratic progress sustainable.

On the occasion of the week, the Prime Minister extended greetings to all former and incumbent members of the police force and wished for the absolute success of the upcoming events.
