State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has urged the international community to take decisive action to protect civilians, uphold humanitarian laws, and guarantee sustained support for the safe and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

Speaking at a high-level panel during the 2026 ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday, the state minister emphasized that accountability for violations of international humanitarian law is essential to resolving long-standing crises.

According to a message received in Dhaka today, Shama underscored the urgent need for increased investment in conflict prevention and called for stronger coordination between humanitarian, peace, and development actors to tackle the world’s growing challenges.

During her address, Shama highlighted the vital role women play in peacebuilding and humanitarian operations, asserting that their meaningful participation in conflict resolution and recovery efforts must be prioritized.

She further expressed deep concern regarding the rising prevalence of digital harassment, disinformation and cyber abuse directed at women and girls, reiterating Bangladesh's formal call for the establishment of a global platform dedicated to addressing technology-enabled violence.

Addressing the specific challenges faced by the displaced Rohingya population, the state minister voiced alarm over recent funding cuts.

She warned that shrinking humanitarian support could significantly exacerbate vulnerabilities among the displaced, particularly for women and girls.

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s firm position on the crisis, Shama stated that the "safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation" of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals to their homeland remains the only sustainable solution to the issue.

In addition to her participation in the panel, the state minister held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the event with Dr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, where the two officials discussed matters of mutual interest.
