Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for a coordinated and unified effort to harness the country’s vast maritime potential, emphasizing that the protection of national interests must remain the highest priority.

In a message issued on the eve of World Hydrography Day 2026, the Prime Minister highlighted that the government is actively working toward this objective, aiming to transform the blue economy into a primary driver of the nation’s future prosperity.

The Prime Minister asserted that in the context of the twenty-first century, the ocean is no longer just a geographical boundary; instead, "it is one of the principal foundations of economic growth, trade connectivity, energy security, environmental balance and national strategic capability."

He commended the initiative to celebrate World Hydrography Day 2026, specifically praising this year’s theme, "Transforming How Ocean Data is Shared," as both timely and relevant.

Reflecting on the importance of information exchange, the Prime Minister noted that modern, secure, and efficient sharing of ocean-related data is essential for technological advancement, safeguarding national interests, and strengthening maritime security.

He explained that "the rapid and reliable exchange of information makes it possible to ensure safe navigation, prevent accidents, protect the environment and implement the sustainable management of marine resources more effectively."

Bangladesh's maritime zone, he noted, serves as a cornerstone for economic strength and sovereignty, housing significant biodiversity and commercial potential.

He specifically acknowledged the role of the Bangladesh Navy, stating, "the hydrographic activities of the Bangladesh Navy play an indispensable role in ensuring safe navigation routes, preparing accurate seabed charts and supporting the planned development of coastal regions."

These efforts are vital for reducing navigational risks and improving port management.

Reaffirming the government's stance, Tarique Rahman said, "We are determined to maximize the utilization of marine resources while preserving national interests."

He added that current strategies include the modernization of hydrographic activities, the integration of advanced technologies, and the digital transformation of information systems.

To sustain this progress, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of developing skilled human resources, expanding research, and fostering public-private cooperation.

He concluded by calling for "coordinated efforts from both the public and private sectors" alongside enhanced international cooperation to build a proficient workforce, while wishing every success to the programmes organized for World Hydrography Day 2026.
