Bangladesh has renewed its dedication to broadening its footprint and capabilities within United Nations peacekeeping operations.
This commitment was emphasized during a bilateral discussion at the UN Headquarters in New York between Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and UN Under-Secretary-General for the Department of Operational Support Atul Khare.
The meeting took place in Room S-2729 during a cordial atmosphere on Monday, according to a press statement released by the Home Ministry.
Both parties reviewed operational support for Bangladeshi police and military contingents deployed globally, accelerating reimbursement procedures, advancing environmental sustainability, forwarding the Women, Peace and Security agenda and organizing the deployment of specialized police units to Haiti.
Opening the dialogue, the minister expressed gratitude to the Department of Operational Support for assisting with peacekeeper reimbursements and commended the division's Environment Section for setting up solar panels in UN missions.
Noting that Bangladesh is exceptionally vulnerable to climate change, he stressed that the nation remains dedicated to cutting down the environmental impact of peacekeeping operations.
Highlighting that Bangladesh pioneered the integration of solar power in these operations, he stated the country is ready to leverage its background to expand renewable energy initiatives across mission sectors.
Addressing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, the minister asked the UN to channel more resources into gender-sensitive, green infrastructure to provide secure working environments for female personnel, while also calling for advanced training to better prepare units for high-threat environments.
Turning to security challenges in Haiti, the minister announced that Bangladesh Police finalized preparations to dispatch three specialized Formed Police Units.
He noted these units exceed standard capabilities, incorporating expertise in SWAT, explosive ordnance disposal, rapid response, forensics, cybercrime, riverine tasks, and anti-narcotics operations.
To optimize these specialized assets, a high-level police delegation from Bangladesh is set to join Memorandum of Understanding negotiations at the UN Headquarters from July 15 to 17, 2026.
The country also indicated readiness to co-deploy specialized teams alongside self-sustaining units from other nations.
Concluding the talks, the Home Minister reiterated national dedication to international peace under the UN emblem, voicing confidence that domestic expertise paired with UN logistics will boost mission efficacy.
Atul Khare lauded the courage, discipline, and proficiency of Bangladeshi personnel, praised the country's environmental leadership, and confirmed that the proposals concerning Haiti and other matters would be carefully reviewed.
