Bangladesh is anticipating an immediate reply from both India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) concerning the repatriation of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and a trio of suspects detained over the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Thursday.

The Home Minister shared these updates during a press briefing addressing contemporary national issues at the Home Ministry inside the Bangladesh Secretariat.

He assured reporters that all legal protocols have been strictly followed, stating that the government has completed every formal requirement under the law to secure the extradition of former IGP Benazir Ahmed from the UAE, alongside the three suspects implicated in the Hadi murder case from India.

He expressed optimism that a response from both sovereign governments would arrive shortly.

Providing further details on the former police chief's status, Salahuddin explained that Benazir Ahmed was taken into custody in the UAE on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice.

Following this arrest, the UAE authorities requested the formal paperwork, prompting Bangladesh to dispatch all required extradition documents within just three days, well ahead of the 30-day deadline provided to them.

Turning to the homicide investigation, the Home Minister confirmed that Bangladesh has likewise transmitted all essential documentation to Indian officials to facilitate the repatriation of the three suspects, a group that includes the principal accused, Faisal Karim Masud.

While acknowledging potential hurdles, the minister pointed out that the three individuals are presently undergoing judicial proceedings in India for cross-border infiltration, an issue that might decelerate the repatriation timeline.

Nevertheless, he highlighted a crucial legal avenue, noting that the standing extradition treaty signed between Bangladesh and India permits the transfer of these individuals back to Bangladesh even while their legal trials remain active in the Indian court system.
