Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has formally requested that the Indian government accelerate the extradition of convicted fugitive and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside the individuals suspected in the murder of Shaheed Osman Hadi.

The demand was conveyed during a courtesy call from Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi at the Secretariat on Monday morning.

Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman briefed the media following the meeting, noting that Dhaka’s stance on the extradition of high-profile fugitives was communicated clearly.

“The issue of the return or extradition of convicted Hasina to Bangladesh came up, and we asked them to expedite the extradition process. We hope India will respond positively in this regard,” said Dr. Khalilur Rahman.

Regarding the suspects involved in the killing of Shaheed Hadi who are currently detained in India, the Foreign Minister confirmed that all necessary documentation has been submitted.

"This is an extremely sensitive matter for us, and we have asked them to extradite the killers to us as soon as possible," he added.

During the session, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally welcomed High Commissioner Trivedi to his post.

The envoy shared his positive experiences since arriving in Dhaka, and both sides emphasized the necessity of fostering an "enabling environment" to strengthen long-term bilateral cooperation.

Addressing the August 5 incident in New Delhi—where Sheikh Hasina made a public appearance—Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman confirmed that Bangladesh had lodged a strong protest.

He reported that Indian authorities have since expressed regret and conveyed an understanding of Dhaka’s position.

However, Khalilur underscored that the matter extends beyond mere apologies, as it strikes at the integrity of Bangladesh’s state institutions.

"A state has three pillars: the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary. A competent court in Bangladesh tried Hasina and convicted her," Khalilur explained, asserting that a convicted individual belongs in custody and should face the legal process if they intend to mount a defense.

"What Hasina did on August 5 last amounted to showing contempt for Bangladesh's Judiciary, one of the pillars of the State, and the Government of India allowed that to happen," he said.

The Foreign Minister expressed hope that New Delhi would refrain from actions that undermine Bangladesh's constitutional framework in the future, noting that he felt "somewhat reassured" following his recent diplomatic exchanges with the Indian side.

On the subject of potential high-level travel, the Foreign Minister clarified that no decision has been reached regarding a visit to India by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation following the formation of the new government, and a separate invitation exists for the Prime Minister to attend the BRICS Summit as the current Chair of BIMSTEC, Khalilur emphasized that these diplomatic overtures remain under consideration.

He further noted that substantive bilateral concerns, such as the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty and border management, were not on the agenda for this specific meeting, as it was classified as a formal courtesy call.
