A fugitive convict in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman has been captured by detectives after evading law enforcement for nearly 45 years.

The arrest of retired Major Md Mozzaffar Hossain was confirmed on Thursday afternoon by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch (DB) Chief Md Shafiqul Islam.

While confirming the breakthrough, the DB chief refrained from sharing additional specifics or further details surrounding the operation that led to the capture.

According to sources within the police department, Mozzaffar Hossain had been on the run and remaining absconding ever since the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman took place in 1981.
