DNA samples from two suspects apprehended over the brutal murders of retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty and his three family members in Rangpur have yielded a "statistical match" with biological evidence retrieved from the crime scene, according to senior police officials.
Laboratory analyses performed on evidence including date seeds, partially eaten cucumber slices, and discarded cigarette filters matched the suspects' profiles, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Detective Branch) Sonaton Chakroborty confirmed on Thursday night.
"Tests on the DNA samples collected from Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das at the CID Forensic Lab in Dhaka matched the DNA found in the evidence," he stated.
According to sources, preliminary forensic examinations had identified male DNA on the date seeds, cucumber fragments, and cigarette butts, though the individuals to whom the DNA belonged remained unidentified until comparisons were run against samples obtained from the two detainees.
The bodies of 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a former teacher at Rangpur Zilla School, alongside his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their 25-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, and 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, were discovered on August 22 inside their locked residence in the Machhuapara area of Rangpur city.
Within six hours of the recovery, law enforcement authorities arrested Mugdha and Siddharth in connection with the quadruple homicide.
On the night of September 20, both suspects were transferred from Rangpur Central Jail to Dhaka, where their DNA samples were gathered at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters the following day.
Investigators harvested more than 35 items of evidence from the crime scene, including a fruit knife, foil paper used to consume Yaba pills, cigarette butts, cucumber and date remnants, traces on a washbasin, and handwritten notes in a notebook belonging to one of the victimized children. The seized materials were dispatched to forensic laboratories in multiple phases.
Police previously indicated that the perpetrators remained inside the residence following the killings, where they consumed dates and cucumbers before fleeing. The Detective Branch (DB) continues to spearhead the investigation.
