The Election Commission (EC) will initiate required procedures concerning Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, who was removed from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami following allegations of moral misconduct, once an official communication is forwarded from Parliament.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud shared this position while answering questions from media representatives at his Nirbachan Bhaban office in Agargaon, Dhaka on Thursday.

“Following the expulsion of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from Jamaat-e-Islami, the Commission will take action regarding his membership of Parliament only after the matter is officially referred to the EC by Parliament,” he stated.

The election commissioner noted that no formal reference has arrived from Parliament regarding the issue as of yet.

“Once such a reference is received, the Commission will examine the matter through an investigation and the necessary hearing in accordance with the law," he explained.

Addressing further inquiries, Abdur Rahmanel affirmed that upon receiving a reference from Parliament, the EC will evaluate the situation and render a determination following a thorough probe and hearing.

He pointed out that Gazi Nazrul Islam retains his parliamentary position while the issue remains under review.

“However, if he resigns from the post of MP, the matter will no longer fall under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission," he clarified.

The commissioner emphasized that relinquishing a parliamentary seat and stepping down from a political party represent distinct legal matters.

“If Parliament follows the necessary procedure and refers the matter to the EC, the Commission will take action in accordance with the law," he reiterated.

Abdur Rahmanel concluded by mentioning that formal communications of this nature are expected to be transmitted to the EC through the Speaker's office.
