Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed his expectation on Monday that India will accelerate the extradition process for deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted on August 5, 2024, following a mass student-led public uprising.

The matter was raised during a meeting between the Prime Minister and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi at the Cabinet Division Office inside the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Shahadat Shadhin.

At the beginning of the audience, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended a warm welcome to the Indian envoy, who in turn shared his observations and experiences from his first two months serving in Dhaka.

Briefing reporters on the proceedings, Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Shadhin noted that key aspects of bilateral engagement were addressed. "Bangladesh expressed its expectation that India would expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina," he stated.

Furthermore, Bangladesh renewed its formal call to the Indian government to hand over those responsible for the assassination of Shaheed Osman Hadi, Shahadat confirmed.

Highlighting the future trajectory of neighboring ties, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of establishing a conducive atmosphere to meaningfully progress diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.

The bilateral discussions were also attended by Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Humaiun Kobir, and other high-ranking officials.
