Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has advocated for a renewed beginning in bilateral ties with India, asserting that historical grievances should be set aside in favor of a partnership built on mutual equality, cooperation, and constructive dialogue.

The Home Minister shared these remarks on Monday during a courtesy call from Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

Emphasizing the deep-rooted connections between the two nations, Salahuddin Ahmed stated, “Bangladesh and India are interdependent in many ways, including geographically, socially, politically and economically. Leaving the past behind, a fresh start is essential to strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries.”

Acknowledging the existence of outstanding bilateral challenges, the Minister underscored that these obstacles are not insurmountable if both parties engage with genuine intent.

“There are some differences and issues between the two countries, but these can be resolved through mutual cooperation and dialogue,” he said. “We must move forward with our friendly relations through discussions based on equality. India must come forward with sincerity in this regard.”

High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi responded with a commitment to deepening the partnership, noting that the relationship transcends mere map coordinates. “We do not only share geographical boundaries; we also share the dream of prosperity,” the envoy remarked.

Addressing the complexities inherent in regional diplomacy, Dinesh Trivedi suggested that such friction is a natural component of democratic engagement.

“Challenges over different issues are normal in a democratic culture,” he noted, describing the presence of such discourse as “part of the beauty of democracy.”

Expressing optimism for the future of the bilateral agenda, Dinesh Trivedi concluded, “There is no such complicated issue between the two countries that cannot be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic means,” and voiced his hope for a stronger, more vibrant era of cooperation ahead.

The high-level meeting, which both sides described as fruitful and positive, was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and representatives from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
