The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday officially submitted nomination papers on behalf of its Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for the upcoming presidential election.

A delegation from the party, led by BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, handed over the required documentation to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin—who is serving as the Chief Election Officer for the election—at the Election Building in Agargaon.

In the filing, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, the lawmaker for Narsingdi-2, acted as the primary proposer for Fakhrul's candidacy, while fellow Standing Committee Member and Dhaka-3 lawmaker Gayeshwar Chandra Roy seconded the motion.

The submission followed an earlier endorsement by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who formally presented Fakhrul's name as the party's candidate during a Standing Committee session held in the Cabinet Division's conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

The proposal received unanimous approval from attending committee members.

The official nomination papers had previously been collected on August 9 by Parliamentary Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni alongside BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The filing aligns with the election schedule released by the Election Commission (EC) on August 6.

Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed explained that the CEC finalized the timeline after consulting with the Acting Speaker pursuant to Section 5(3) of the Presidential Election Act, 1991.

Per the official schedule, August 13 was set as the window for submitting nomination documents between 10 am and 4 pm.

According to the Election Commission, the voter list for the presidential election has already been finalized.

The submitted nomination papers will undergo formal scrutiny on August 16, with candidates permitted to withdraw their nominations until 4 pm on August 18.

Voting is scheduled to take place on August 20 from 2 pm to 5 pm in the session room of the Jatiya Sangsad.
