Bangladesh is looking to secure an additional $5 billion in US investments over the next five years, with the government planning to work closely with the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) to achieve this goal.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir announced this while speaking as the chief guest at AmCham’s 30th-anniversary celebration, held Saturday evening at the Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden ballroom.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen, AmCham President Syed Mohammad Kamal, Vice-President Ala Uddin Azad, former presidents, executive committee members, government officials, business leaders, and journalists attended the event.
Highlighting that bilateral trade between Bangladesh and the US currently exceeds $13 billion, the commerce minister noted that this relationship goes beyond mere trade statistics. He stated that US companies are contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s development through investment, technology, employment, knowledge-sharing, and global best practices.
Muktadir mentioned that AmCham member institutions have already invested over $5 billion in Bangladesh and contribute more than 20% to the national revenue, reflecting foreign business confidence in the local economy.
Upcoming Target: During a recent meeting with the Prime Minister, AmCham leaders expressed interest in bringing an additional $5 billion in US investment over the next five years, which the government has pledged to support.
Favorable Climate: The minister pointed out Bangladesh’s strategic location, youthful and skilled workforce, large domestic market, and high-potential sectors like digital innovation, healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services.
Key Reforms: To attract foreign capital, the government is actively working on streamlining business processes, increasing digitization, enhancing trade facilities, and ensuring a predictable, stable policy framework.
Expressing optimism for the future, the minister called for a strong partnership among the government, business communities, investors, and organizations like AmCham to foster innovation, create jobs, and build a lasting economic alliance between the two nations.
