Bangladesh and Lithuania have agreed to significantly expand bilateral ties by unlocking untapped economic opportunities, boosting trade and forging strategic partnerships in information technology, cyber security and artificial intelligence, following a high-level diplomatic meeting in the capital on Thursday.
The consensus was reached when Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Humaiun Kobir, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, State Minister Kobir underscored the need to bolster trade and economic cooperation between the two nations. He urged Lithuania to import high-quality Bangladeshi products, including readymade garments, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and leather goods.
Presenting Bangladesh's growing economic potential, Kobir also invited Lithuanian investors to tap into the country's expanding investment landscape.
In response, Vice-Minister Verbickas highlighted Lithuania's technological advancements and expressed his country's strong interest in collaborating with Bangladesh across key digital sectors.
Both leaders identified information technology, e-governance, e-registration, financial technology (FinTech), cyber security, digitalized transportation systems, artificial intelligence, and high-tech medical device manufacturing as primary drivers for future cooperation.
The discussions also encompassed human mobility, skilled employment opportunities, and visa facilitation for Bangladeshi students, entrepreneurs, investors, and tourists.
Addressing regional stability, State Minister Kobir briefed the visiting Vice-Minister on the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis and sought Lithuania's continued international support for the safe and sustainable repatriation of the displaced population to Myanmar.
Looking ahead, both ministers stressed the importance of deeper bilateral engagement ahead of Lithuania assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the January–June 2027 term.
Vice-Minister Verbickas extended his congratulations to Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on his election as the President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He expressed optimism that diplomatic ties between Dhaka and Vilnius would reach new heights as Bangladesh leads the UNGA and Lithuania assumes the EU Presidency.
Highlighting the strategic importance of regional trade networks, State Minister Kobir emphasized utilizing the EU-Bangladesh Business Forum and existing commercial frameworks to establish regional connectivity centering Lithuania as a gateway to the Baltic region and wider European markets.
