Over the past six and a half years, 15,712 lives have been lost on Bangladeshi roads due to motorcycle accidents, according to data from the Road Safety Foundation.

Between 2020 and July of this year, the organization recorded a total of 16,065 motorcycle accidents, which also left 14,143 people injured.

A significant portion of those killed are adolescents and young adults, with over half of the injured falling between the ages of 13 and 35.

These findings were released in a report issued by the Road Safety Foundation on Saturday (August 8).

Key Accident Statistics
Heavy Vehicle Collisions: 39.30% of motorcycle accidents were caused by impacts from heavy vehicles.

Loss of Control: 34.21% of accidents resulted from riders losing control of their motorcycles.

Head-On Collisions: 22% of accidents occurred due to head-on crashes.

Primary Culprits: Freight vehicles were cited as the most responsible for the accidents (40%), followed by reckless motorcycle riding (36%+) and reckless bus driving (~13.5%).

Underlying Causes and Youth Vulnerability
The report states that motorcycles have become 30 times more hazardous compared to other four-wheeled vehicles.

However, due to inadequate and inaccessible public transport systems alongside severe traffic congestion, people are increasingly driven to use motorcycles, leading to a surge in accidents.

The foundation highlighted that reckless driving, non-compliance with traffic laws, and weak law enforcement are primary drivers of these tragedies.

Furthermore, 71% of all registered motor vehicles in Bangladesh are motorcycles, a large share of which are operated by teenagers and youths.

The organization noted that marketing language and promotional styling from motorcycle manufacturing and marketing companies are fueling high-speed aspirations and attracting adolescents to reckless riding.

Recommendations by the Road Safety Foundation
To curb the rising trend of casualties, the organization has put forward several key recommendations:

Technology & Safety: Implement safety and surveillance technology on motorcycles and mandate the use of standard, high-quality helmets.

Strict Enforcement: Ensure rigorous enforcement of traffic laws.

Awareness Campaigns: Conduct safety awareness programs in educational institutions and utilize social media through the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for safety campaigns.

Advertising Reform: Modify the tone and imagery used in motorcycle advertisements to discourage excessive speed.

Infrastructure & Transit: Build safe road infrastructure and introduce affordable, passenger-friendly public transportation.
