Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, has emphasized that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is impossible without acknowledging the significance of the mother tongue.
Speaking virtually at the silver jubilee celebration of International Mother Language Day at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Friday (February 21), he highlighted the deep connection between language and identity.
"The mother tongue is at the heart of one's identity. Everyone must understand its importance; otherwise, the Three Zero Theory and SDG targets cannot be fulfilled. These goals cannot be achieved by leaving anyone behind," he stated.
Dr Yunus further explained that the mother tongue is the most natural medium for self-expression. He noted that language has played a crucial role in Bangladesh's history, including the July uprising and the country's independence movement. Language embodies national, cultural, social, and political aspirations, contributing to the diversity among nations.
To build an inclusive society, prioritizing the mother tongue is essential, he stressed. He also warned that no language should be allowed to disappear, as languages are fundamental to preserving individual identity, culture, and heritage.
Additionally, Dr Yunus called for eliminating language barriers in higher education and expressed strong confidence that UNESCO would take active steps to protect and promote every mother tongue worldwide.
