'The Army is Always Determined to Maintain Peace': ISPR

In a statement regarding the violent clashes between two political parties in the capital's Kakrail area, the Bangladesh Army has announced that it is "always determined to maintain peace."

The statement was posted on the Army's official Facebook page on Friday night (August 29). The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) also released the same statement.

According to the Army's statement, a clash and chase-and-counter-chase occurred between activists of two political parties in the Kakrail area of Dhaka at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday night. Several people were injured during the incident. The Army and police were deployed to bring the situation under control. Initially, police arrived at the scene and attempted to control the situation. However, as the conflict escalated, they requested assistance from the Army. When the police arrived, they were attacked, and several members were injured.

The statement further noted that at the beginning of the incident, law enforcement members requested both sides to remain calm, leave the area peacefully, and resolve their differences through a peaceful process while respecting the country's existing laws. However, despite repeated requests, some activists ignored them and tried to destabilize the situation through mob violence. They collectively attacked law enforcement agencies and further escalated the violence with a torch procession at approximately 9 p.m. During this time, they threw bricks and stones and also attempted to set fire to various structures.

Additionally, the movement of ordinary citizens in Bijoynagar, Nayapaltan, and adjacent areas was severely disrupted, increasing public suffering. The statement mentioned that they ignored all attempts by law enforcement to find a peaceful solution. As a result, law enforcement was forced to use force to protect public safety. The statement also noted that five Army members were injured in the day's incident.

In the statement, the Army declared that the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of mob violence. The Bangladesh Army reiterated this government decision and is always prepared to take a firm stand against all forms of mob violence to bring public relief and security. The Army is "always determined to maintain public safety, law and order, and peace."

Aminul Islam: Appointed to the Ministry of Education; he resigned several months ago. Khoda Baksh Chowdhury: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs; he resigned on December 25. Prof. Dr. Md. Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar is to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow to attend the funeral of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government and people of India at the funeral of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” the Indian high commission in Dhaka said in a statement this evening. Begum Zia’s Janaza would be held after Zohr prayers while the high commission statement said Jaishankar would accordingly visit Dhaka on December 31. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the morning expressed deep sorrow at Begum Zia’s demise, recalling her contributions to Bangladesh and bilateral relations. “Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” he said. The Indian premier recalled her political legacy saying “as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered”. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015.
