The United States and the United Kingdom will provide an additional $96 million in assistance for the Rohingyas. The commitment was announced at the first high-level United Nations conference on the issue.
Foyez Ahmed, the Senior Assistant Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, confirmed this information in a Facebook post on Wednesday (October 1) night.
In his post, he wrote that the US and UK announced a new aid pledge of $96 million at the first high-level conference on the Rohingya issue held at the UN Headquarters on Tuesday. The United States announced a grant of $60 million and the United Kingdom announced $36 million.
At the same high-level conference on "The Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar," held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday (September 30), Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that the root cause of the Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar, and the solution must also be found there. He urged the international community to exert effective pressure on Myanmar and the Arakan Army to stop the persecution of the Rohingyas and take immediate steps for their repatriation to Rakhine State.
He added that the suffering of the Rohingyas continues even eight years after the genocide began, noting a lack of initiatives to resolve the crisis and an alarming shortfall in international funding.
