Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the newly appointed Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives, stated today that the government intends to organize local government elections as quickly as possible.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday (February 18) during his first official working day, the Minister noted that the law and order situation has improved significantly and the economy has reached a state of stability. "I believe that through our collective efforts, we can achieve even better results," he said.
A Mission for Nation-Building
Highlighting the challenges ahead, the Minister described his role as part of a broader mission for nation-building.

Transition to Democracy
Reflecting on the political climate, the Minister remarked that total stability following a mass uprising or revolution takes time. "It has been a year and a half. The interim government held elections, and now an elected government is in place. This is a major achievement," he said, adding that the international community has recognized the election as inclusive and acceptable.
Tackling Corruption and Commodity Prices
Addressing immediate economic concerns, the Minister stated that he would act on the Prime Minister's directives during today’s Cabinet meeting regarding commodity prices ahead of Ramadan.
On the topic of governance, he reaffirmed his commitment to eradicating corruption. "My party believes the interim government did what was necessary to facilitate the transition to democracy. That was the core objective, and they succeeded."
When asked about reports of Awami League offices reopening in various locations, the Minister dismissed them as isolated incidents, stating, "One should not generalize based on scattered occurrences."
