In a move to modernize the agricultural sector and provide direct state assistance to marginal farmers, the government has decided to distribute "Farms Cards" to 22,000 farmers as part of a pilot project.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to officially inaugurate the distribution program during a ceremony in Tangail Sadar Upazila on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh.
The decision was finalized during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister at the Secretariat on Tuesday (March 17).
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Assistant Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon, informed reporters that this is a pre-piloting project.
While the Prime Minister will launch the initiative in Tangail, the cards will be simultaneously handed over to farmers across 11 selected upazilas.
The "Farms Cards" system is being introduced in line with the BNP's electoral pledges to improve the livelihoods of farmers. The system is designed to ensure that agricultural subsidies and other forms of state support reach farmers directly.
Eleven upazilas across the country have been selected for the initial phase of distribution. Farmers in these areas will be the first to benefit from this specialized digital card. The selected upazilas include:
The meeting at the Secretariat was attended by Agriculture Minister Md. Aminur Rashid, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shah Alam, and State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.
Also present were Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Planning, and Rehan Asif Asad, Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, along with high-ranking officials from various ministries.
