Prime Minister to Confer Independence Award This Afternoon

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will present the ‘Independence Award-2026’ to 15 distinguished individuals and 5 organizations today, in recognition of their glorious and outstanding contributions to the national level.

According to sources from the Prime Minister's Office, the ceremony will take place at 4:00 PM on Thursday (April 16) at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

This year, the late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been nominated for the award for her overall contributions to independence, democracy, women's education, and nation-building.

Alongside her, the government has selected 14 other eminent citizens and 5 institutions for the nation's highest civilian honor.

The individuals nominated for the Independence Award-2026 include:

Liberation War: Major Mohammad Abdul Jalil (posthumous).
Science and Technology: Professor Zahurul Karim, former Secretary and Director General of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute.
Literature: Ashraf Siddiqui (posthumous).
Culture: Hanif Songket, renowned host of the magazine show Ittyadi, and celebrated singer Bashir Ahmed (posthumous).
Sports: Table tennis legend Jobera Rahman Linu.
Social Service: Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury (posthumous), founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra; Md. Saidul Huq; and Maherin Chowdhury (posthumous), a teacher at Milestone School & College who tragically died in a plane crash.
Public Administration: Kazi Fazlur Rahman (posthumous).
Research and Training: Mohammad Abdul Baki, Professor M.A. Rahim, and Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua.
Environmental Conservation: Abdul Mukit Majumdar (Mukit Majumdar Babu), Chairman of the Prokriti O Jibon Foundation and Director of Channel i.

The institutions selected for the award are:

Liberation War: Faujdarhat Cadet College.
Medicine: Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Rural Development: Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF).
Social Service: SOS Children's Village International in Bangladesh and Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

The Independence Award is the highest state honor in Bangladesh, presented annually since 1977 to recognize excellence in various fields, including the Liberation War.

Each recipient is honored with a gold medal (50 grams of 18-carat gold), a replica of the medal, a certificate of honor, and a cash prize of 500,000 BDT.
