Ending years of anticipation, the process to upgrade the 150-year-old Bogra Municipality into a City Corporation has finally been finalized.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Bogra this Monday (April 20) to officially inaugurate the new City Corporation. The news was confirmed by Ujjwal Hossain, Protocol Officer-1 to the Prime Minister.
The Long Road to City Status
The journey toward this expansion began significantly in 2006 under the government of then-Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. At that time:
While the expansion was intended as a precursor to becoming a City Corporation, the transition was stalled for years due to various administrative complexities and political shifts.
Despite repeated demands from the residents of Bogra during the subsequent Awami League tenure, the status remained unchanged.
Final Approval and Process
The momentum shifted following a proposal by the then-District Commissioner (DC) of Bogra, Hosna Afroza, during the interim government's term.
Following public notices and the resolution of local opinions and objections, a final report was submitted to the Ministry of Local Government.
Although there were initial indications that the declaration would occur before Victory Day in December 2025, the final breakthrough came during a recent Pre-NICAR (National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization) secretary committee meeting.
A notice signed by Imtiaz Morshed, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Cabinet Division, confirmed that the proposal to upgrade Bogra Municipality was approved alongside seven other development projects, including the declaration of Mokamtala in Shibganj upazila as a new upazila.
