In a significant move to bolster regional cooperation, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing on Wednesday to deepen the "Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership" between the two nations.

The visit, spanning from May 5 to 7, marks Dr. Rahman’s first official trip to China, signaling a high-priority diplomatic engagement for the new Bangladeshi government.

Teesta Project and Economic Synergy
A key highlight of the bilateral talks was Bangladesh’s formal request for Chinese involvement and support in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP).

Both sides agreed to align their national development strategies, with a focus on high-quality Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation.

The ministers pledged to expand collaboration across several critical sectors, including:

• Trade and Investment: Enhancing industrial ties and economic exchange.
• Technology: Strengthening cooperation in the digital economy.
• Public Health & Water: Collaborating on water resources and healthcare initiatives.

Geopolitical Solidarity and the "One-China" Principle
The meeting underscored a strong mutual commitment to core national interests. Bangladesh reaffirmed its "firm adherence" to the One-China Principle, explicitly stating that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and opposing any form of "Taiwan independence."

In return, China reiterated its unwavering support for Bangladesh’s national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, emphasizing respect for the development path chosen by the Bangladeshi people.

Regional Stability and the Rohingya Crisis
Addressing regional conflicts, both nations called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in the Middle East. They expressed a shared commitment to maintaining maritime security, specifically ensuring normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Regarding the Rohingya crisis, China pledged to continue its role as a mediator between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Beijing committed to facilitating dialogue to find a "mutually acceptable solution" for the repatriation of forcibly displaced persons from Rakhine State.

A Vision for a Multipolar World
Both diplomats emphasized their commitment to the U.N. Charter and multilateralism. Bangladesh expressed high regard for President Xi Jinping’s vision of a "community with a shared future for mankind" and welcomed China’s various Global Initiatives.

As the meeting concluded, Dr. Khalilur Rahman extended an invitation to Wang Yi to visit Bangladesh, further cementing the momentum of high-level diplomatic exchanges between the two Asian partners.
